Intel is organizing a 'green' event in Second Life, where residents can plant sunflowers at Intels SL garden. For each flower planted, a donation is made to a conservationists' group, and the avatar is entered in the sweepstakes to win a Gateway laptop. That is, if you're an RL resident of the US or Canada. If you're from another part of this planet, you're screwed; you cannot participate in the sweepstakes. I find it very strange that a company with such a worldwide presence would limit this sweepstake to US residents and/or and Canadians only. This should not be necessary in 2008.

Intel recently launched a new initiative aimed at Second Life residents - visit their island and plant sunflowers. For every sunflower planted, they will donate $1USD to the Conservation International Foundation, up to $10,000. Participants from the US and Canada are also entered into a sweepstakes contest to win a notebook computer. It's interesting to see companies changing their Second Life strategies to create spaces and builds that take advantage of SL's capabilities. Not sure how many people have participated so far, but I'm betting they'll hit the $10k goal in no time.

Intel has a garden of sunflower seeds at the base of one of its buildings. Avatars are encouraged to come buy and plant a flower. Intel will donate 1 US$ to the Conservation International Foundation (10,000 US$ Max). I can plant up to 10 sunflowers each day. The score board here shows that over 6000 sunflowers have been planted this week. Am I saving the world? I am sure that someone is going to complain that the carbon footprint to pull this off is not any help to the cause. However, those resources were going to be used anyhow. This way, people are made aware and and money is donated.
