Deus Blankes RE: The awesome mosque @ Virtual Morocco [by Sean McDunnough]

I understand your concerns about areas of the mosque being offensive. We have been thinking about the possible threats to the mosque like you have stated and do not plan to actually hold prayer in it; though people are more than welcome to come do so. However, we have been talking with a few Muslims, in Morocco and abroad, as to how we should go about keeping the project towards the educational aspect instead of the religious aspect of the mosque.
There will always be people who are “griefers” but we hope that they as well, will actually choose to experience the island and not solely see Morocco as not just another Muslim country and perhaps understand more of what the Islamic / Muslim culture is about. This would in turn have the possibility to educate that person about the culture and help them understand that being of a certain culture does not automatically brand them as “a terrorist people” or “a culture who forces their women to cover all of their body all the time while outside the home”. Even if we only educate a single person that had the intention to cause a problem on the island, the information and work we have done was worth it.

Taamarbuuta I hope you enjoyed the tour and the information that we have provided. The clothing as well. :)
I hope to see you there for the “official” opening of the Casablanca Island.

taamarbuuta RE: The awesome mosque @ Virtual Morocco [by Sean McDunnough]

Then you'd be surprised at what some Moroccan girls wear while they're walking by the mosque. Where I live in Morocco, there's one shisha cafe next to a mosque as well.

I can understand what you mean about some of the behavior (of course bombing a mosque is going beyond the realm of normal offensive behavior!)

But as far as behavior going on outside a mosque (SL or RL), any true Muslim knows that it's his (or her) behavior and his behavior alone that counts, not what anyone else does to try to offend or hurt him.

Just my two cents. I definitely get what you're saying. My avatar accidentally wandered around outside at the meeting yesterday naked (someone finally told me - it was my first time in SL), so I've been there :)

<sl:simname>Casablanca</sl:simname><sl:regionX>129</sl:regionX><sl:regionY>82</sl:regionY><sl:regionZ>28</sl:regionZ><sl:globalX>1018</sl:globalX><sl:globalY>1093</sl:globalY><sl:globalZ>28</sl:globalZ><sl:avatar>Sean McDunnough</sl:avatar>

Sean McDunnough RE: The awesome mosque @ Virtual Morocco [by Sean McDunnough]

Hi taamarbuuta... no, I wasn't part of the project.

My concern is that it's all too easy, and likely, for someone to do something outrageous.

Some idiot griefer who has a prejudice against Muslims might see it as an opportunity to exact 'revenge' in some way, by bombing the mosque, for example. Or disrupting the prayer service in some other way.

We know that the anonymity of the web allows people to get away with stuff they wouldn't otherwise.

And the reality is that despite SL being called a 'virtual' world, I think the experiences and feelings we have in 'playing' it are very real.

Even some of the everyday SL behaviour, if engaged in and around the mosque, may be seen as offensive to those who come to experience it and feel it as a real place of worship.

In fact, as I was setting up to take the photograph a female avatar walked right into the front of the shot wearing a lacy bra, panties and suspender belt! I was very tempted to post that one - I love some of the bizarre juxtapositions we get in craziness that is SL - but I couldn't bring myself to do it - it just didn't feel right.

I waited til she left. Even then someone else was trying on a big red Koolaid man avatar and flying around the mosque and sitting on the building. Not as offensive to Muslims, perhaps, but still seemed inappropriate and distrespectful.

<sl:simname>Casablanca</sl:simname><sl:regionX>129</sl:regionX><sl:regionY>82</sl:regionY><sl:regionZ>28</sl:regionZ><sl:globalX>1018</sl:globalX><sl:globalY>1093</sl:globalY><sl:globalZ>28</sl:globalZ><sl:avatar>Sean McDunnough</sl:avatar>

taamarbuuta RE: The awesome mosque @ Virtual Morocco [by Sean McDunnough]

I was there last night too - great work (were you a part of the project?)

I don't think that it'll create problems, honestly. Morocco is the only Muslim country that doesn't allow tourists to freely visit mosques - and it was a law of the colonial French, not the Moroccans themselves.

My husband (a Moroccan) said it's not offensive (even the part about not taking off shoes), so long as anyone visiting the SL mosque doesn't do anything outrageous. But just visiting it, even at prayer time? No problem.

<sl:simname>Casablanca</sl:simname><sl:regionX>129</sl:regionX><sl:regionY>82</sl:regionY><sl:regionZ>28</sl:regionZ><sl:globalX>1018</sl:globalX><sl:globalY>1093</sl:globalY><sl:globalZ>28</sl:globalZ><sl:avatar>Sean McDunnough</sl:avatar>
